Alice Leese "Flanking"

$2,500.00

36 x 48 oil on panel

Abby grew up flanking calves and I have watched her flank hundreds of calves over the years. In the branding pen everyone has a job from the youngest to the oldest. The roper will catch two back legs and drag the calf to the branding fire. The flankers job is to grab the tail or the rope, depending on which side will be branded, on the YT Ranch we brand on the left and the calf is flanked so that the left side is up. The job is all about timing and leverage, flankers don’t need to be overly strong as technique is important to get the calf off balance. I have enjoyed watching Abby and our neighbor Ivy flanking over the years and sometimes I will show video of them to the boys so they can see how it is done.
