Melinda is not afraid of hard work. She will take on any job that needs done. This drawing depicts her placing a small pellet on the backside of the calf's ear to support it's growth. It's a job that requires precision and accuracy. The calves were being branded at the same time, creating billows of smoke that often obscured the whole table. There is both contrast and beauty in the hard lines of the corral and the soft wisps of smoke. Women in the American West are no different; hard lines forged from self-less work and soft hearts shaped by the love of family, the animals and the land. Where There's Smoke represents the passion and grit of women who continue to shape the West.
