Elizabeth Lewis Scott "Grit & Grace"

24” x 18”, Oil

Stann Maraman and her husband Neal have built their longhorn breeding business, begun in 2017, on a foundation of outstanding genetics. Their operation is small and extremely selective, and requires tremendous attention to detail. Prepping cows for breeding requires meticulous record keeping on DNA, genetics, etc. Windows of fertility are exceptionally short and are predicted to the hour. Great care must be taken to create a safe environment for both animals and handlers (8-foot horns can do great harm!), and in this painting, Stann is securing one of her charges into the stocks to ensure safe keeping during whatever procedure is on tap. The sweat, highly technical work, tender care, and prayer provided by Stann bears fruit by the addition of a new calf to the herd, extending the survival of this heritage breed which is part and parcel of the Great American West. The goal of my work is to impart the Character expressed by my subjects over the decades. I'm a very traditional, atelier-trained artist, and believe firmly that the strength and value of a finished piece is driven by the drawings from which it evolved.
