Holly Henry "Home on the Range"

$6,500.00

Leather (roughout pig vamps, kangaroo tops), boot size 9.5 A

These boots were created in collaboration with Sarah Welty, a mustang trainer working in the Front Range of Colorado. Traditionally, bootmaking has been a man's job and women were only allowed into a boot shop as top stitchers, working unseen and uncredited to create the incredible artistic stitching that makes cowboy boots unique. So, for this pair I wanted to use top stitching to tell a story, or rather two stories. Each boot displays a different scene: one of wild freedom, and one of domesticity. Both scenes are beautiful and peaceful, as both lifestyles have their benefits. While it is incredible that this country has so many feral horses roaming our public lands, there are unavoidable hardships for these animals, such as resource shortages, overpopulation, climate change, the steady creep of land development. These feral horses are periodically rounded up and adopted out in an attempt to manage large herd numbers and their toll on the land. In my work, I want the viewer to consider both sides, wild and domestic, for their individual benefits and beauty. This story is told in a way that I hope honors the talented female top stitchers that have come before me.
