Megan Wimberley "Cowgirl"

$6,600.00

24” x 48”

I always enjoy watching my cousin, Morgan, work with horses because it’s an act of communication and trust-building. She gets so much from the horses she works with by creating a true partnership. In this image, Morgan is throwing a rope at me while sitting on one of her younger horses. Despite his limited time in training, you can see that his full attention is on her—a calm and constant communication. Naming this piece was a challenge. I had so many thoughts about Morgan’s focus and confidence, her skill, the mutual respect she shares with her horse, and the traditions and skills she is keeping alive. I had a list of clever titles as options, but when I looked into her face the only title that felt right was a simple one: “Cowgirl.” I’ve heard people say that a woman who is a skilled hand should be called a “cowboy,” not a “cowgirl,” as if the term were an insult. But that isn’t right. Cowgirls work hard right alongside the men. Their work and skill is no less legendary. “Cowgirl” is a powerful thing to say and a powerful thing to be. Let’s celebrate the cowgirl!
