My model for the painting “Dusty”, is Kim Valentine, my niece, of the Davis Arch Ranch of New Mexico. I portray her as she is often seen, covered in dust, roping and dragging calves to the branding fire. My paintings are a portrayal of the strong, beautiful women working cattle ranches today. She isn’t painted nearly as often as the cowboys, but she’s there for every task and then some. She works cattle all day and then cleans, cooks, does laundry, often with a baby on her hip, or in front of her in the saddle. She knows how to bottle feed a dogie, doctor an injured horse, break ice, start a colt, and nurture her family.
